1.25.13 Panthers See Lead Slip Away

On Friday night the past 2 PAL champions squared off at Burlingame High. San Mateo made the short 1 mile drive down the road for the big rivalry game. Both teams came into the game with only 1 defeat in league. The Panthers came out determined to make a statement on both ends of the field. Their defense would look to shut down one of the top forwards in the league. In the 15th minute senior Eduardo Trujillo would take on 2 players down the line and with some creative footwork he would leave them behind and get to the end line. His perfect cutback pass found the feet of Jonah Snyder who hit a 1 time shot past the sprawled out keeper. The defense would continue to frustrate the high powered San Mateo offense and the game would go to the half at 1 nil. In the second half, BHS controlled much of the play and doubled their lead as Senior Tim Lutvaliyev scored one of the goals of the season and his 9th of the campaign. A blast from 22 yards out that found the far post side netting. As the Bearcats pushed numbers up to try and get back in the game it left them open in the back. BHS created chances, but couldn't find that 3rd goal. With just 3 minutes left San Mateo would get one as Marco Zambrano found himself alone in the box and bent a left footed shot past Goalie Jack Murphy . This made for a very tense last few minutes and 2 minutes into injury time San Mateo was awarded a free kick. It was played into the BHS box and San Mateo's captain rose above everyone else and headed the ball into the back of the net and broke the hearts of the Burlingame faithful. The final whistle blew just seconds after that and the game ended in a tie. This one hurts, said coach Sharabi, We worked so hard for 77 minutes and to see us give up a 2 goal lead in such a short period of time is hard to take, but going through this tough experience will make us stronger as a team. We learned that we need to get the ball to the corner and find a way to kill off the game in those final minutes. Experience is the best teacher of all and I know the boys will bounce back next week. The Panthers will be tested again next week as they play 3 games and open up with Woodside at home on Monday.

1.23.13 BHS Gets Impressive Away Win

On Wednesday afternoon the Panthers travelled to Daly City to play the Westmoor Rams. Coming into this game BHS had a little bit of a scoring drought scoring in only one of their last three games. As the rain fell down, so ended their drought. The Panthers would hit the Rams for 4 goals on route to a 4 nil victory. Eduardo Trujillo would get things going in the 15th minute. Tim Lutvaliyev took the ball down the wing and beat 2 players in the box before sending a searching ball on the ground that the Rams could not deal with. Trujillo capitalized being the quickest player to react and he slammed his left-footed shot into the net. The rain was falling heavily and was effecting the play. The players on both teams were having a tough time controlling the ball. The score was 1 nil at the half. After just 2 minutes of the second half BHS would strike again. Jonah Snyder sent a penetrating through ball to Lutvaliyev whose speed and well-timed run left him with a 1 on 1 with the keeper and he would slot it home for the team's second goal. 10 Minutes later Junior Shea Gill took his player on and got to the endline before cutting back a cross for Jonah Snyder . He took a touch and calmly bent a shot past the diving keeper. Senior Carlos Ayar capped the scoring on a back post header off a Zack Friedlander corner kick. The Panther defense once again posted a shutout only allowing 4 shots all game. This was a very important win for us today said coach Mike Sharabi after the contest. Our defense has shown again that they are among the league's best. We had been having trouble in front of goal and it was great to see us put some goals in today. It was exactly what we needed heading into our rivalry game with San Mateo.

1.15.13 Panthers and Bears Play to a Scoreless Draw

Going into today's game at BHS, each team had an opportunity to go to the top of the PAL standings with a win. Neither team would seize that chance as they had to split the points. Burlingame came out strong as they have been doing all season creating 3 very good opportunities in the first 15 minutes. Menlo Atherton's keeper was called into action and he made a great save on a left footed shot from Junior Jonah Snyder . The Panthers controlled most of the play switching the point of attack often and playing the majority of the half on MA's side of the field. The Panther defense would once again be stout and posted another shut out, only relinquishing 3 shots on goal. The second half MA looked to push forward, but the BHS defense would continue to hold them off. In the final minutes the Panthers had an opportunity to win it. Micah Clemente found himself with the ball on the left side of the box and hit a shot far post that would be saved by the keeper and he covered up the rebound fast. The game would end scoreless and the Panthers would have to settle for the tie. Coach Mike Sharabi said, Soccer can be a cruel game. We felt like we had the better of the play today, we just didn't finish our opportunities. Our defense, Chris Flygare, Adrian Eaton, Nick Darnell , and Andrew Quintana played another great game and they are establishing themselves as one of the league's best. The boys played with heart today and that's all I can ask for. I'm looking forward to our next game. I see improvement in this team every day. The Panthers are back in action on Thursday at 4 at BHS against Carlmont.

Going into the break the Panthers wanted to finish 2012 with a win and they got it with gutsy performance. They took on a very strong Gilroy Mustangs team who’s record was 5-2 ahead of Saturdays clash. The Mustangs controlled most of the play in the midfield throughout the first half, but the BHS defense stayed strong, not giving up any real chances. Jack Murphy would make 3 first half saves. In the 20 th minute Junior Jonah Snyder beat his defender and sent in a perfect cross to Tim Lutvaliyev who would make no mistake and blast it past the keeper. The score was 1 nil at half. Just 3 minutes into the second half the Panthers would double their lead. Junior Brian Gonzales sent a brilliant no look back heel pass to Lutvaliyev who held off his defender and blasted a shot into the upper corner, it was his 6 th goal of this young season. The Mustangs would not go quietly, dominating play from then on. They scored a free kick to make it 2 to 1. Lutvaliyev received a second yellow card for a high kick and BHS spent the last 10 minutes playing down a man. They defense held them off and the game ended 2 to 1. After the emotional win coach Sharabi said, “I am very proud of the boys today. This was a great win over a very good opponent. We showed great character fighting through lots of adversity. I am very impressed with the maturity and leadership of this team. We got a couple great goals from Tim and the defense carried us the rest of the way. We are improving every day and we are looking forward to the start of league play in January.”

In the pouring rain the defending division 1 CCS champions showed why they are ranked amongst the nation's best. They thoroughly dominated Burlingame from beginning to end in a 5 to 1 win. Watsonville scored 2 in the first half and 3 in the second, while the Panthers would get a goal from Freshman Ethan Hyman , on an assist from Senior Will Stevenson . The Wildcats improved to 5-0, only allowing 1 goal this season, while the Panthers drop to 1-2-1. After the game coach Sharabi said, “We got beat by a great team today. They were confident on the ball and moved it around us effectively. We will learn a lot from this loss. Watsonville is the kind of team that we aspire to play like.
On a cold night in Burlingame, the Panthers welcomed former Frosh coach Greg Markoulakis and his Aragon Dons. The game was a tough and physical one right from the get go. BHS was awarded a penalty kick and the Dons keeper made a great save to keep the game scoreless. Just 3 minutes later BHS would get a free kick outside the box. Junior Jonah Snyder would step up and sneak a shot through the jumping wall and it found the back of the net. Later in the half Aragon would get a penalty kick. Senior goalie Jack Murphy dove to his right and made the save. The game would be 1 nil at the half. In the second half the Panthers came out determined to get another goal. Senior Carson Wong broke through the defense and sent a beautiful cross in that Tim Lutvaliyev calmly sent past the diving keeper. A few minutes later Aragon would have a chance to cut the lead in half, as they earned another penalty kick. It was M urphy on the spot again making another diving save and preserving the 2 goal lead. In the 66 th minute Lutvaliyev made it 3 nil with a strike from the top of the box that took a deflection on the way in. The Dons got a consolation goal on a free kick in the final minutes as the score finished 3 to 1. Coach Mike Sharabi said about the victory, “We played well tonight. We finished our opportunities and our goalkeeper came up with some huge saves. Our defense played great. They are the backbone of this team. We needed this win after a tough loss at the weekend. Also, it was nice to get a win in front of our home fans.”
